Deadline For Franklin County Cost Share Program Coming Up

Landowners in Franklin County interested in getting assistance to fight noxious weeds have only a few more weeks to apply for the Cost Share Program.  Todd Harris, Franklin County Noxious Weed Control Program Coordinator, says last year over 5,300 acres signed up for the program, with each landowner getting on average $4.64 an acre to fight noxious weeds.

“It works better to hire an aerial applicator because it’s basically put it on the airplane, and go, and it’s done.  It’s a little rougher ground so, that also makes it more cost effective.”

Harris said it’s important that owners control stretches of land that are not in production, but could be ripe for several nasty weeds.

“The yellow start, diffuse knapweed, scotts thistle, rush skeltonweeds, are the main weeds that we’re concerned with in this program.  And wind will dispurse  all wee species, so if it’s not controlled, its going to be spreading further and further on to their neighbors ground, throughout their land and so on down the line.”

Harris noted unused funds from 2018 were rolled into the 2019 program.  The deadline to apply for the Cost Share Program is January 31^st.
