A new generation of Ag producers here in the United States is doing a better job of outreach and marketing, but a vast majority have a long way to go.  Mark Gold with Top Third Marketing said currently, only 7% farmers use any kind of tool other than cash sales or spot prices to market their grain.  He added that trying to out-guess the market is not a good strategy.

"Nobody can predict these markets. And all these newsletters, commentators on TV, including myself, if any of us knew where the markets were going, we wouldn't be telling them, we'd either be trading them ourselves or long-retired."

Gold believes the best Ag marketers all have one thing in common.

"It's the farmer that takes the emotion out of it. When we get to $8 corn, they're not thinking $10 corn,”  Gold said.  “They're thinking sell this tear, sell next year, sell the year after."
