If beef producers invest in a synchronization program, they need to take every measure to ensure a successful outcome.

"You never want to synchronize anymore animals than you can breed in a three to four hour time period, because generally that's the window we want those inseminated,” said Kansas State University professor and extension specialist, Sandy Johnson.  “And we've tried to put our best science into identifying those windows and it doesn't mean just sometime that day to breed those cows, we want you to look at the hours.

Jonson noted the planning and communicating processes can be a deciding factor in the success of estrus cycle controls.  She added several software products are available to make the planning process easier for producers.  These products assist herd managers in making the right management decisions and establishing a program calendar for each day and each task.

“That's what the estrus synchronization planner is designed to do. We have three different versions of that.  One is our general version that is Excel spreadsheet based, we have a version you can access on a mobile phone, and then our very latest edition is this multi-group.
