As the Northwest prepares to start the 2019 cherry harvest, the trade war between the U.S. and China continues.  Which mean a lack of sales to the commodity’s number one market.  However last month, Representative Dan Newhouse and Senator Maria Cantwell announced the Northwest cherry growers now have access to the USDA’s Market Facility Program to help, partially, offset lost income.

Newhouse said cherry growers were some of the first America farmers to feel the affects of the trade war last year, and that impact continues now.

“With a lot of help from lots of people we were able to make sure that they are included in the support that’s being offered through USDA, so I think that’s a really important step. Particularly as we’re just days away from beginning 2019 cherry’s harvest,” Newhouse said.
