For a long time, several Ag groups, including the National Milk Producers Federation, have called on the FDA to crack down on what they call confusing or misleading branding.

Case in point, Country Crock’s Plant Based butter.  Jim Mulhern, President and CEO of NMPF says this is just a new way to say Vegetable spread, or margarine.  Mulhern said it’s important the FDA crack down on how dairy terms, such as milk and butter are used.

“Country Crock’s attempt a rebranding is simply ridiculous, but it isn’t a laughing matter.  The problem FDA needs to fix is only getting worse.  Labeling abuse is getting out of control, with outcomes that would be comic were they not so unfortunate.”

Mulhern says for the sake of consumer education and marketplace clarity, NMPF is calling on the FDA to act now.
