NASS has launched its fall surveys, collecting data for the fall reports.  The USDA is asking growers of all size and commodity to complete the survey, in hopes of getting the most accurate information.

“We’ll be going out to farmers and asking them acreage, production on their small grains, and we’ll be publishing that on September 30th," said Dan Kerestes is a division director at NASS.  "And at the same time we’re doing that, we’ll also be asking them about their grain stocks and grain stocks will be published on the 30th as well.”

Kerestes said these surveys allow farmers to tell USDA what’s taking place on the farm, and what they may need.

“It allows NASS to measure what’s going on in the industry, and the information that comes from these surveys is used in many different ways.  It allows farmers to make good decisions how they market their information.  And at the same time it allows other people like lawmakers, bankers, analysts to make decisions.”

Kerestes said information gathered in these surveys provide a foundation for crop yield estimates, production practices, and helps set accurate loan rates, disaster payments and crop insurance price elections.
