This week, Dan Newhouse called on U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to improve Washington apple access in India.  Newhouse pointed out that Washington is the largest apple producing state in the U.S, with sales of $2.4 billion annually.  But, he noted local apple growers continue to shoulder significant economic losses because of a 70% tariff imposed by India, a rate that was recently increased by 20%.

Newhouse said the actions by India to increase tariffs on U.S. apples is a damaging situation that will substantially impact growers, packers, employees, and the thousands of jobs they support throughout Washington.  Newhouse asked Lighthizer to continue to work with India to find a positive outcome in our trading relationship.

Negotiations with India are expected to continue this weekend.
