Last week, Representative Dan Newhouse called on U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to improve access to India for Washington apple growers.  The Central Washington Republican says India is a great market for Washington apples, but with the current tariffs, which is now at 70%, it prices local producers out of that important market.  Newhouse said with trade uncertainty around the globe, not having India as a destination will make selling even more challenging for Washington growers.

“We would be trying to market thousands of boxes of apples here in the United States that would typically go overseas. And the impact that would have on prices would be, is not something we want to see.”

Newhouse said the letter he wrote to Lighthizer was met favorably.  He added he is hopeful access to India for Washington apples will be at the top of their trade priority list.
