Oregon’s Cattle Convention gets underway Thursday in Bend.  Jerome Rosa Executive Director of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association said they will address a host of local and national issues impacting the cattle industry.  He said off season grazing permits will be one of the most interesting local topics of discussion.

He said currently, grazing permits runs from April through October, but he notes researchers at Oregon State University in Burns have found there are benefits of fall grazing.

“Extending those permits into November and maybe December and there’s been some interesting research that shows the cattle do well, it sets back some of these annual invasive grasses that we see [in eastern Oregon].”

Rosa adds they will discuss state and federal legislation and how it will impact producers statewide.  And in attendance this week, Jennifer Houston, President of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
