December in National Weather Month.  Kathy Stephenson with Pear Bureau Northwest says through the remaining portion of the month, they will be in grocery stores, on-line promoting the health benefits and wonderful taste of pears grown here in the region.  Stephenson said pears are an awesome fruit for the holidays.

“They’re plentiful, all of the varieties are available, I think we probably only have one pear that’s not available anymore and that’s the Star Crimson, so other than that, the other nine pears that are grown in the Northwest are still available at your grocery store.  They come in sizes and shapes and colors that can really brighten up a holiday table, so it’s just the perfect time of the year in order to celebrate them.”

Stephenson pointed out that pears are a top ten commodity for both Washington and Oregon.  She added that 88% of all fresh pears consumed in the U.S. are grown in the Northwest, and 70% of pears imported to Canada come from Washington and Oregon.  She said it’s not just the grocery store where they’re promoting pears.

“We’ve got folks in social media, posting blogs, and hosting Facebook Live stories about pears this time of the season.”

Pear month wraps up December 31st, but Stephenson pointed out this year’s great fresh crop will continue to be available through May.
