What a difference a week can make.  The first week of January saw mild temperatures and rain showers for much of the Inland Northwest.  Enough in fact that the lower Columbia Basin and Palouse saw soil moisture levels improved considerably.

However, as Marilyn Lohmann with the National Weather service pointed out, the system pumping those showers into our area moved to the west, allowing colder temperatures from Canada to move in.  And she said those colder temperatures will stick around for the foreseeable future, allowing for very cold weather.  How cold, she noted, really depends on cloud cover.

“We do have that little bit of snow cover on the ground, place that have that will tend be kind of cold, we will probably see some single digits into northern Washington and teens down in the Columbia Basin and the Palouse.”

Lohmann said temperatures will slowly warm up as we approach the weekend, with temperatures expected to return to normal for this time of year.  As we look at the coming days, Lohmann said we’ll see another change, with above normal temperatures, with near to above normal precipitation.
