By a 52-39 vote in December, the Senate confirmed Aurelia Skipwith as the new Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Oregon Cattlemen’s Association executive Director Jerome Rosa said Skipwith has many ties to the farming community and understands the issues and challenges ranchers face.

“We feel that this was a really good nomination, and it’s been a while in the making, and we’re pretty excited about it, and looking forward to visiting her when we go back to D.C., here in a couple of months.  So it’s looking like a really positive confirmation for the industry.”

Rosa added a good working relationship with Fish and Wildlife, is vital especially on the federal level.  He noted, the timber industry learned the hard way with the spotted owl, incorrect information can have a devastating and long lasting impact on an entire sector, as well as a way of life.

With December’s Vote, Skipwith became the first African American director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
