After dry conditions to wrap up 2019 and dry weather to start the year, the Inland Northwest received a sizable amount of rain over the past week.  Marilyn Lohmann with the National Weather Service says days if showers led to precipitation totals of ¼” to ½”, with some location reporting as much as 1” of rain the past couple of days.  Lohmann said while those totals are a welcomed sign, it won’t make a noticeable dent in the USDA drought numbers.

“Part of it is due to the soil moisture and the underlying four-months of dryness that preceded this wet period.  Even though it’s been fairly wet, it takes a little more than that to improve the all-around conditions around the region.”

But Lohman noted that as we prepare to transition from January to February, it looks like the weather will change as well.  She said the region will see wet weather through the weekend, then giving way to dryer and cold weather early next week.

Will we see a repeat of February 2019, where locations across the area recorded record amounts of snow in a matter of days?  It’s too early to say, but it looks like the Northwest will see dry weather for the foreseeable future.
