The 2020 Oregon Legislative session could be an interesting one for the Ag community.  As lawmakers gear up for the start of the session Monday, Cap And Trade has already been presented, making that one of the biggest issues in the coming weeks, according to Jerome Rosa.

The Executive Director of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association said supporters of Cap And Trade, better known as House Bill 2020 last session, positioned the legislation as a way to address climate change.  When in reality, “It will be going to Portland to improve roads and reduce congestion, and yet, rural Oregonians from throughout the state, especially our members from eastern Oregon and southeastern Oregon, and all over the state will be paying this increased tax.”

Rosa noted that those pushing Cap And Trade remain very proactive, which means farmers and ranchers will need to be active in Salem and around the state.

Another piece of legislation OCA will watch, a proposed CAFO bill.

“And there’s some language considered in that bill that is also talking about some water issues that we are very concerned about, and keeping a close eye on.  We want to keep our livestock water exemptions that is in place in Oregon, that is an important tool for our farmers and ranchers.”

Rosa said other issues they will follow closely involve water, timber and the environment.
