Administration Looks To Trim USDA Budget By 8%

The Administration is rolling out its final budget request of President Trump’s first term, and the budget proposal looks very similar to the previous requests.  A key piece of Trump's proposal to lower federal spending by $4.4 trillion over the next decade.

To do that, several departments will see less money.

The President’s proposal would, trim USDA's discretionary budget by more than 8% from current levels, from $23.8 billion this year to $21.8 billion in fiscal 2021.  According to POLITICO, the blueprint also would cut $57.7 billion in mandatory agricultural spending by 2030.

When taking a look at money, bailout checks have been sent to farmers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. 

Iowa and Illinois, two of the largest soybean-growing states, have each received more than $1 billion in total payments to producers.  Other top recipients include Kansas, Minnesota and Texas.  All three Northwest states received between $10-$100 million, each, in MFP payments.
