Legislation creating a new vanity license plate in Washington promoting the apple is now headed to Governor Jay Inslee for his signature. On Friday, the state House approved Senate Bill 6032 by a 92-5 vote.

East Wenatchee Senator Brad Hawkins authored the bill, and said this legislation comes at a great time for the apple industry, with the recent roll out of the Cosmic Crisp as well as the 25th anniversary of the Washington Apple Education Foundation. Hawkins noted this legislation, and the entire process was an opportunity to educate those not familiar with agriculture what the apple truly means to the state.

“I’m really excited about this bill, not just because we’re getting the specialty plate, but because we’re able to promote the importance of our tree fruit industry to our state and national economy in the process.”

Funds raised by the license plate will go to WAEF, to help the organization as in promotes education for those associated to with the tree fruit industry.
