Compared to recent years, this winter has been fairly uneventful, and even boring, across the Inland Northwest. However, it appears winter is not going out without a fight as the area will see temperatures drop significantly over the weekend into early next week.

In fact, according to Marilyn Lohmann, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, some locations could see overnight lows drop into the low 20s and even teens. And while temperatures like that may cause concern for tree fruit growers, it’s welcomed news for the snowpack.

“With this system this weekend, we will pick up a little bit of mountain snow, the Cascades could probably see anywhere between 6”-12”, and over the Blues and Wallowa’s probably see 6”-8”of snow.  And those colder temperatures are sure keeping the snowpack pretty well locked up.”

Lohmann says snow is not likely in lower elevations. She added the chilly temperatures will likely stick with us into mid-March. Unfortunately, it looks like the region will remain dry, with little measurable precipitation on the horizon.
