The U.S. economy is struggling right now, thanks to the coronavirus. And while listed an essential industry by governors and the federal government, farmers are feeling the squeeze from COVID-19. Central Washington’s Dan Newhouse said while the focus in D.C. is on the current pandemic, he says for the farming community to bounce back, trade will need to be promoted.

He noted, China cannot be the only market promoted by the USDA or the Administration. He wants to see additional markets expanded, and new destinations explored.

“But we will return to all of things that made our economy great and strong and part of that is certainly trade around the world, for all of the products that we produce.”

Newhouse added for the average American, the coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the importance of a safe and reliable food supply, and the important role the U.S. producer plays in their everyday life.
