Air temperatures across the Inland Northwest are expected to increase in the coming days, thanks to a ridge of High Pressure that will set up off the Washington and Oregon coast. Marilyn Lohman with the National Weather Service said temperatures will climb in many locations into the low to mid 70’s with a lot of sunshine. Those conditions she noted will be good news for area soil temperatures.

“A lot of the area has been stuck in the 40’s and a few 50’s, but we’ll see those soil temperatures warm pretty significantly into the 50’s and some 60’s, and we’ll see warmer temperatures along the foothills, and toward the Palouse where soil temperatures have only been in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.  We’ll see those warm pretty significantly too.”

However, area soils are dry as well.

Lohmann says 32% of of Washington’s top soil is considered short to very short, meaning a fair portion of the state is very dry for early spring. She added it doesn’t look like the northwest will see significant rain over the next couple of days, outside of isolated mountain showers.
