In our zeal for disinfecting, we sometimes not only misuse house chemicals, we use them on things that don’t need it. Kansas State University Extension Spokesperson, Karen Blakeslee, said CDC reports several incidents like that.

"One was a person who decided to soak her fresh produce in a mixture of bleach, vinegar, and water."

Putting her, Blakeslee noted, in danger from the deadly gasses generated from that mixture. Plus she notes those produce can absorb those chemicals, making it dangerous to consume them.

Same with spraying disinfectant on bag of salad mixes. Blakeslee said those bags are porous and what you spray on the bag can end up on the food. Studies show if you want to rinse your produce, just use water no need to wash food packages. But she says, wash your hands instead.

"Wash your hands when get home from the grocery store or after your food’s delivered."

And when you put your groceries away wash your hands again.
