With higher meat prices, and in some cases, shortages reported throughout North America, Pear Bureau Northwest has announced a plan to help consumers expand their meatless menu options. Kathy Stephenson with PBNW said with slowdowns and closures of meat packing plants nationwide, many consumers are wondering how they are going to replace the chicken or beef they are accustomed to having int their diet. She said it started with the Pear industry reaching out to a variety of plant-based meat industry leaders.

“Impossible Burger, or the Beyond Meat Company, as well as a lot of plant based proteins like soybean products and other meat alternatives that have already been embraced by more the vegan, vegetarian, or the flexitarians who eat plant based often, maybe its meatless Monday.”

Stephenson says with so many Americans still preparing a larger number of meals at home, it was important for Pear Bureau Northwest that the recipes were tasty and fun. She added that adding pears to a diet not only adds a lot of flavor, but many health benefits.

“Pears have more fiber in their little bodies than the top 20 fruits in the grocery store.  So, it’s a great alternative.  We know that berries have a little bit more fiber, but they are not available all year long.  And they are not at a price point that’s great for consumers.”

Stephenson noted there are still a lot of fresh pears available in the market, making many of these recipes very easy to add to daily life.
