An estimated one in five American adults struggle with mental health issues. That translates into 500,000 farmers. But many experts fear that figure on the U.S. farm is much higher.

"We can memorize all the statistic we want but that doesn't mean necessarily  that we'll know how to help someone when that help is really needed."

Or help ourselves, noted Dr. Courtney Cuthbertson with University of Illinois Extension. She is one of the developers of a new online stress training course says things could improve things. Up until now, she said, theses course have been targeted for those that deal with those in the Ag community; but this course is for anybody including producers who are facing weather and financial stresses they can't control, which can often lead to serious mental health repercussions.

So being able to engage in this course online can help us say, "Okay, well,  if we're not able to control these other things; what are the things that we can control, and how can we reach out and get support?"

Dr. Cuthbertson said from there, farmers can connect others with that desperately support.
