The 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee recently released its official scientific report. For the first time the organization is recommending “what to eat for health”, with specific guidelines for children from birth to two years old. The committee recently highlighted that the diets of pregnant women, infants and toddlers can be improved by including eggs.

“The unequivocally confirmed that eggs as a first food is an important food for toddlers and for pregnant women," American Egg Board President and CEO Emily Metz. "And they also highlighted choline which is a really important nutrient that’s critical for brain health and development, and suggested that feeding eggs as a first food for toddlers can reduce allergies.”

Metz said the nutrients found in eggs can help build a foundation for a healthy life, not just for toddlers, but adults, as well.

“The report really showed that not enough Americans are getting the recommended daily intake of choline and just two eggs a day can really drastically change that. There’s a lot of studies that show not only does it help early in life, but as we begin to age, it really can help reduce the rate of cognitive decline.”

The recommendations bring further market promise for egg producers as American’s are already purchasing 11.4% more eggs year over year.
