Having a fall calving kit in place is important for cow/calf operators since the next two month will be busy when it comes to calving.

But what should you have in that kit?

Oklahoma State University's Glenn Selk said it all starts with a five-gallon bucket to hold those supplies.

"And I'd prefer one that I can disinfect and make sure that everything I put in it each time can be and stay pretty clean."

Selk added non-irritant antiseptic and lubricant should be included, but he added there are cost-effective substitutes.

"Just good non-detergent dish soap. Something you can buy at any grocery store and that'll work just fine as a lubricant."

Obstetrical chains, mechanical calf pullers, iodine solution, and injectable antibiotics as well. Self added that simple items should also be included in to the fall calving kit; such as a flashlight and batteries old bath towels and a plastic bottle to squirt solutions to prevent calves from getting infections.
