It looks like the 2020 apple crop is going to be a little smaller than anticipated. According to NASS, the national crop is expected to come in a 10.6 billion pounds, which is down 3% from last year's crop. USDA Research Analyst, Jaclyn Kramer said that drop mirrors the decrease expected right here in the Northwest.

"The Washington crop was forecasted at 7.4 billion pounds; which is down from last year."

Kramer added production numbers are expected lower in other major apple producing states, such as New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

"And this lower supply is likely putting upward pressure on prices."

Depite the smaller crop the USDA is saying American consumers could see more apples at their local grocery store over the next 12 months.

Why?

High tariffs from China and India could push more fruit in to the domestic market.
