The top American representative to the United Nations Food Agency's, Kip Tom, says much of this United State's national aid goes to help people in countries in conflict.

"Over 65% of the 86 countries we deliver humanitarian aid to is in the midst of a protracted civil conflict Syria Yemen, Somalia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, a crosses the hill of Africa," Tom recently noted.

He added many of these people are stuck in a vicious cycle of poverty, hunger, migration, and are subject to he human trafficking. He pointed to a link between hunger and extremism.

"They are desperate to feed their families and often have nowhere else to turn. And when people are unable to feed their families, they give up hope. And without hope, as we have mentioned, it's easier to get caught up in extremism which turns in to terrorism threatening our own national security," Tom added.
