As the U.S. looks to expand trade opportunities for farmers, one areas of focus right now is Europe. The United States is currently in talks with the both the EU and the U.K. about improving trade relationships, and allowing more American Ag imports. Central Washington’s Dan Newhouse said increasing trade with the EU will be an uphill climb.

“The EU has a lot of what I would say are non-trade tariff barriers in place with us, and that’s a difficult situation because they’re protecting their own agricultural industries to an extent we now have a huge trade deficit with the EU.  So, that’s a tough one we’ll have to continue to work on.”

Newhouse added he’s more optimistic about a trade deal with the U.K, especially as the country continues to work on leaving the EU, and what that means for the country’s economy going forward.
