Many across the Northwest were surprised by a sudden blast of cold air starting Friday, that not only dropped some temperatures into the single digits, but left some areas, specifically north Idaho with several inches of snow, all a week before Halloween. Meteorologist Marilyn Lohmann with the National Weather Service notes in just a few days, the region went from temperatures ten degrees above normal to 10-20 degrees below normal.

Some have wondered if this blast of artic weather means the region will experience an intense, cold winter. Lohmann said it’s not a simple cause and effect relationship.

“I think we are headed for a maybe little bit cooler winter to come, but it’s a little bit hard to say exactly when that’s really going to start, because I see a little bit warmer conditions coming back here in the short term.”

Lohmann added temperatures are expected to climb closer to average as we start November. She added looking at the month ahead, the long-term forecast calls for temperatures all over the map, and above normal precipitation.
