Northwest producers interested in participating in the 2021 Dairy Margin Coverage program have just a few more days to sign up.

"It's good management tool," said USDA Undersecretary Bill Northey. "We encourage producers to look seriously at it. the 2021 sign up ends on December 11th."

Northey pointed out that DMC started under the 2018 Farm Bill, with the first payments distributed last year.

"2020 saw a big payout for producers that had dairy margin coverage; especially as dairy prices dropped significantly back in April, May, and June. And that was a very important time. So all producers that signed up in 2020 got helped by the program."

The voluntary program offers a variety of protections Northey said.

"In this crazy time that we're in coronavirus and any other types of things that can impact their margins can really cause some producers to be able to sleep at night with dairy margin coverage for 2021."
