NW 2021 Wheat Seedings down 2%, U.S. Plantings Up 5%

Going against the national trend, Northwest wheat growers planted fewer acres for the 2021 season.

Idaho growers seeded 740,000 acres of winter wheat for the 2021 crop, up 3% from 2020, and 1 percent above the 2019 crop.

Oregon farmers planted 710,000 acres of winter wheat, down 4% from the 2020 crop and down 4% from 2019.

Washington growers seeded an estimated 1.75 million acres of winter wheat for the 2021 season, down 3% year-over-year, but unchanged from 2019’s numbers.

Nationally an estimated 32 million acres of winter wheat have been planted for 2021, up 5% from 2020 and up 2% from 2019. This represents the fourth lowest United States acreage on record. The largest increases in planted acreage are estimated in Kansas, Montana, and North Dakota, while the largest decreases are estimated in Nebraska and Texas. Record low acreage was seeded in Nebraska and Utah.
