"It's part of a state [program] called the Soil Health Initiative which involves Washington State University, Washington State Department of Agriculture, and the Washington Conservation Commission. WSU, being kind of the lead educational institute in that effort, has taken the lead on pulling this together."

Each 90 minute sessions take place twice daily. The event is free, but registration is required. Benedict said SoilCon will be a benefit to people from all kinds of backgrounds, from farmers, ranchers and consultants to Ag educators and the general public.

"The topics range across the week. They go from everything like big-picture stuff down into very granular soil health assessment sort of components."

Topics include:

  • The Status of Soil Health in the United States and Washington State
  • Soil Health Indicators
  • Soil Health Specific to Washington's Production Systems
  • Lessons Learned from Long-term Soil Health Research

Benedict added that soil health is an increasingly important issue across the globe as every crop or livestock system essentially begins with the soil.
