Flies can create problems for dairy producers year round, leading to a drop in production, a loss in revenue or both. For Northwest dairy farmers looking to control fly, and improve their bottom line, Central Life Sciences has two feed through products that can do so for a low overall cost. Mark Upton, Director of Sales for Feed Additives at CLS, says when cattle are on pastureland, he recommends Altosid.

“When you put cattle out on pasture, the horn fly is the #1 problem, in fact horn flies are the largest economic loss to cattle in North America.  It’s estimated to be about $1 billion a year.  Bigger than anything else.  When that adult fly comes and lays its eggs in the manure the Altosid is going to prevent them from becoming an adult.”

And when those cows are in confinement, Upton says they have ClariFly.

“It’s very similar to Altosid, you’re feeding it to the animal just so they can put it in the manure.  But when you put animals in confinement you’re going to have more than just one fly, you’re going to have some stable flies, you’re going to have some house flies.  Resistance is not an issue, you don’t run into a lot of these hard kill strategies that have resistance issues, you just don’t run into those with the feed additives and its very economical.”

Upton added to help reduce fly populations, its important you keep spilled feed to a minimum, clean up any decaying, rotting organic matter and look at implementing an integrated pest management system. Upton added it’s imperative that producers look at protecting their investment, and that starts with addressing fly populations.
