USDA's top official for climate, Robert Bonnie, says moving forward, one of the things he would like to focus on is the Forest Service's Civilian Conservation Corps, which was set up after The Great Depression. He noted the program creates about 10,000 opportunities annually for young folks, for veterans, and others.

"We've got an opportunity to build on that and a lot of work that the Forest Service already does involves resilience. Whether it's post-fire rehabilitation in the West, improved forest management; a range of activities."

Bonnie outlined his vision which would involve collaborative efforts from different USDA agencies.

"To create a civilian climate corps building on the work that we already do in conservation corps in the Forest Service. And we want to look to other areas in agriculture department and rural development and elsewhere where we can build in the Forest Service experience and provide more opportunities for young folks and veterans."
