On Wednesday, President Biden is scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh to pitch the first part of his $3 trillion effort fix the nation’s roads, bridges, and water systems, many, key for agriculture. Biden’s ambitious push on the heels of his nearly $2 trillion virus relief package, already faces stiff headwinds from Republicans and some Democrats over its size and tax hikes needed to fund it. Yet the $3 trillion infrastructure plan holds some interest, even among detractors.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said he sees possible benefits for the farming community.

“Anything we do, through funding the road fund and the extent to which that helps farm-to-market roads, including even primary roads, and I suppose, in some instances, even including interstates.”

But it’s not just about road transportation Grassley noted.

“We need to make sure that the infrastructure on the Mississippi River, Illinois River, and as far as Sioux City on the Missouri River, is included in that, as well.”

Congress has passed some bills to spur planning and improve cost-sharing for the massive undertaking, but the locks continue to wait in line for Army Corps approval.
