On January 3rd, 1961 President Eisenhower's Press Secretary, James Haggerty, announced that the U.S. was severing diplomatic relations with Cuba. That was followed by a trade embargo and the closing of the U.S. Embassy on the island nation. 54 years later, the Obama Administration announced and effort to normalize relations. However, that effort was changed during the Trump Administration. But now, with Joe Biden as President, there's a renewed effort to normalize relations with Cuba.

"I would hope that as the administration gets its people in place, and as it begins to look at other parts of the world, that they recognize that agriculture can be a good entree, if you will, a good first step to improve relations with Cuba in a way that makes sense," said Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Vilsack added he thinks U.S. agriculture looks at Cuba as a potential market that needs American products.
