According to Lance Honig with NASS, nationwide, winter wheat growers put in about 33 million acres, for the first year-over-year acreage increase since 2013.

"Our first forecast for harvested area for grain thought, is 24.6 million acres that's up 6.9%year-over-year."

But the gap between planted and harvested is still quite large. And Honig noted there's quite a bit abandonment.

"Some of the persistent dry conditions out there caused much of the key growing area having an impact. [But when it comes to this year's crop] first year forecast, 52.1 bushes per acre, that's up 2.4% or 1.3 bushels per acre from last year's final yield."

That Honig said would be the third highest yield ever. He added that would put NASS' first production forecast of the season at 1.28 billion bushels.
