June is National Home Ownership Month which highlights just how important homes are to society.

"They're a source of wealth for so many families," said USDA Deputy Undersecretary, Justin Maxson. "They're a foundation of a strong economy and prosperous communities that provide security a place for kids to lay their heads down at night."

Maxson added many people don't know that Rural Development actively helps low income residents in small communities buy their own home.

"So we have a 502 Direct program which is a loan from the government to low income an individual or a family."

Single mom, Amanda Donnell in Kalispell, MT benefited from this program last fall.

"Honestly if it weren't for the USDA's mortgage, I wouldn't have been able to get a home, and we would probably still be considering moving at some point."

Instead they're staying in the community where her two sons were born.
