July 2021 marks 20 straight years of Idaho Beef Month, which industry insiders say highlights the valuable role beef plays both in the state’s economy and in individual diets. Idaho Cattle Association executive vice president, Cameron Mulrony, said a majority of the cattle operation are locally owned and operated.

"That has a huge impact on our rural economy because those people are embedded here in the state. They own that ground, their taxes goes to their school. There's no overhead, everything is in that family unit, in that community and stays in the community. That's one of the neat things about Idaho, is that we have these small communities based around agriculture.  The beef industry is the largest part of agriculture here in the state.”

Mulrony added Idaho producers enjoy a variety of nearby commodities that provide for an excellent source of feed. Mulrony, said to celebrate the month long event, consumers should eat more beef, have a barbecue and do their homework to learn how sustainable and healthy the beef industry is for the Gem State and the nation as a whole.

"Make sure when you're grilling that up, you're spreading that message that our industry, the beef industry, the cattle industry in the state of Idaho and across the nation is important, healthy, climate friendly and sustainable. Send the correct message rather than the headlines we read.”

Beef is the #2 commodity in Idaho, in terms of cash receipts. Dairy is the #1 commodity.
