While it may not come under USDA's purview, it will could have a big impact on farmers nationwide. Part of President Biden's recent Executive Order, focused on competition, gives Ag producers the ability to conduct do-it-yourself repairs or use repair shops independent from equipment manufacturers. And when it comes to manufacturers who says the dealership is needed when proprietary technology is on the line, that would come under the jurisdiction of the federal trade commission.

"I think that's exactly where it's really directing government to take a look at," noted Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack. "How do you create an opportunity for producers to have the best opportunity to repair their equipment and at the lowest possible cost while still maintaining the assurance that the technology that's connected to the equipment will continue to function and continue to work? So I think it's time to really make sure that producers aren't stuck in a contractual circumstances situation where they are really ending up having to pay significantly more for simple repairs that can be done by anyone."
