The condition of the spring wheat crop continues to worsen.

"Just 9% of the US spring wheat is rated in good to excellent condition, down from 11% a week ago. And it's a whopping 66% of the spring wheat rated very poor to poor. That is up from 63% a week ago."

USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey pointed out that some of the poorest numbers are right here in the Northwest.

"Washington state lead the nation in spring rate wheat rated very poor to poor. That number is 88%."

He says the last time spring wheat conditions were so low was in 1988.

"If you look at this week, same week, last week in July back in 1988 at this time, we saw the spring wheat crop rated just 4% good to excellent. 72% very poor to poor. And the big comparison to last year really shows how dramatic the drought is this year compared to how conditions were a year ago. 70% good to excellent and just 6% very poor to poor."
