Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife crews remain active with wolf depredations in the eastern portion of the state. On Wednesday morning, a range manager found an injured 450 pound calf in a large public grazing allotment in the Five Points Creek area of Union County. The calf was taking to an ODFW office for examination, where investigators determined the injured occurred approximately a week earlier.

According to ODFW investigators, part of the left hind quarter was shaved and the calf was examined. Over 40 parallel tooth scrapes up to 3/8" wide and up to 3" long were found on the hindquarters above the hocks. There were also several tooth scrapes up to 1/4" wide and 2" long on the left side of the neck. The location, size, number, and direction of tooth scrapes is consistent with wolf attack injuries on calves.

This week’s depredation was attributed to the Five Points Pack. This marks the 5th depredation in eastern Oregon in September, and the 7th depredation to occur in Union County this year.
