Not only has production of specialty crops, organic crops, local food, and greenhouse production grown in recent years, but as the RMA's acting Administrator Richard Flournoy pointed out, so has crop insurance offerings in those areas.

"All the growth we've had in those programs over the years, as well as the interest in those programs and that we have made a lot of changes to organic and specialty crop coverage based on producer feedback."

Additional changes to crop insurance for growers of those specific commodities came about via the 2018 Farm Bill. That was among the highlights of recent RMA reports. Additional findings from the repots include an over $19 million dollar increase in the liabilities for insured specially crops over a three decade period. And an increase in organic crop insurance liabilities from $207 million dollars in 2010 to $1.7 billion dollars ten years later.
