One of the major topics of discussion during the recent UN World Food Summit was not just changing farming systems to be more productive and climate-friendly, but also finding ways to stop loss of food from farm to consumer.
In some countries, a third of food that's produced is lost.

"Simply because we don't have the storage capacity or the proper transportation system, or refrigeration capacity."

Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack said when it comes to the goal of providing more food to more people, "iit's a whole lot easier to save food that's already being produced than it is necessarily that it is to change the methods of production."

Which he said will also have to happen, "but it ought to start with our ability to make sure that the food that we are growing today is actually use as it was intended."
