Tuesday will be an exciting day for the Jerome, ID community, as The Scoular Company will hold a ceremonial ribbon cutting of their new facility that will manufacture plant-based alternative protein made from barley. The 15,000 square foot facility will produce barley protein concentrate, Emerge, used for aquaculture feed and pet food. Scoular CEO Paul Maass, said Emerge fits really well with the local beef and dairy industries.

“Anytime we can innovate and add value to grain that we’re originating from the producers in the areas that we do originate, that’s important.  We feel that that’s a role we need to play.  And this is a new innovative product that as we learn more about it, we got excited about it, and should expect that from a company like Scoular that we will continue to find ways to add value for our producers.”

The Emerge facility will be constructed on four acres south of the Company’s existing livestock feed ingredients facility and is expected to create 13 jobs. Maass anticipates a rapid start up all the way to full production.

“What we’re seeing from a demand perspective by the customers is really strong, so we do believe it will take us 3-4 months to get fully ramped up and then we’ll kind of evaluate it from there.  But we really do believe we’ll be able to ramp up to full production relatively quickly.”

Scoular’s presence in Idaho includes several grain handling facilities and the state-of-the-art livestock ingredients facility in Jerome.
