The USDA is in the final stages of making changes to crop insurance rules for apple growers. Apple growers, are nearing the end of what has been a four-year USDA reevaluation of your crop insurance program and USDA has just put out its final proposed changes in the program for apples. The RMA's Marcia Bunger said some of these changes are, strictly apple oriented and very technical. But as she pointed out these changes also give growers more choices.

"Enabling producers to elect different coverage levels; instead of price levels, by type.  Which makes it more flexible and we're also going to allow producers to insure at higher price for apples sold predominately to direct market."

All the proposed changes now open for public comments. To get started visit RMA's Website, where details on the proposal are available, as well as opportunities to comment.

"I would encourage people to go in and take a look and provide some good feedback," Bunger noted.

The comment period ends in mid-February.
