If there’s an early message for the 2022 growing season, it’s expect to pay more for inputs this year, especially fertilizer products. Novozymes said they have improved their products to help chickpea producers watch that bottom line.

“Previously we’ve been providing a product called TagTeam," said Jason Ward is Commercial lead for North America at Novozymes BioAg. "We’ve added two new microbes to that, and now it’s TagTeam BioniQ.  We sold this product in Canada during the past year, because it was registered there first, growers are really enjoying the yield benefits that they’re seeing with that, and now we’re bringing it to the U.S.  It’s available to chickpea growers in the U.S. this year.”

Ward noted that BioniQ helps affix nitrogen from the air and helps improve phosphate usage, saving growers money in the long run. He added the same BioniQ technology provided to chickpea growers is also available for wheat in the coming year.

“By that, it’s better utilization of nutrients in the soil.  A wheat farmer doesn’t need the ribosome, because wheat isn’t a legume it doesn’t affix nitrogen from the atmosphere, so we’ve provided BioniQ just as a stand-alone for wheat growers so they can receive the same benefits.”
