Microsoft Puts $50 Million Into Sustainable Jet Fuel

Microsoft is putting $50 million into a LanzaJet facility in Georgia that will produce jet fuel from ethanol. LanzaJet said last week its facility will start producing sustainable jet fuel next year. Reuters said experts consider the airline industry one of the hardest to decarbonize. Governments and investors are trying to boost incentives to produce lower-carbon emitting jet fuel. LanzaJet said work is almost complete on its Freedom Pine Fuels Biorefinery.

Plans are to start producing 10 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel per year from sustainable ethanol in 2023. The plant will also produce sustainable fuels from waste-based feedstocks.

Last year, the White House announced a goal to lower aviation emissions by 20% by 2030 as environmental groups place increasing pressure on the industry to lower its carbon footprint. Microsoft created its Climate Innovation Fund that will invest $1 billion over four years to speed up the development of carbon removal technology.
