For many in the industry, bookkeeping and the business end of farming can be challenging. To help make sense of the numbers, Washington State University will hold a series of four virtual meetings in February focused on the business of agriculture. Program Coordinator Kate Ryan said the topics discussed during the “Farming by the Numbers Series” address issues common for most in the Ag industry.

"[There were] farmers amongst them and folks that are similar positions to what I am that work with farmers on a regular basis. We came to the conclusion that this set of topics seemed to be the ones where we kept getting the most questions from the most amount of folks out there."

Ryan noted that those who grew up on a family farm typically don't need to be reminded that farming is a business. However, even the most experienced farmer might not have a great system for tracking cash movements. Ryan said she wants to avoid having producers go through a shoebox full of mixed receipts at the end of the season.

"For some of the folks that haven't been in it as long or are looking at it as possibly a next step, the more that they think about it as a business, the better off they will be as they try to be successful on that farm."

Classes will take place Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. during February. The first meeting takes place February 3rd. The cost for all four classes is $15, or $5 per single class.
