The past two months has produced record setting dryness in lower elevations of northern and central California moving into the Great Basin.

“Downtown San Francisco, with records going back to the beginning of the gold rush, San Francisco experiencing its driest January/February on record with just under 2/3 of an inch of rainfall," said USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. "[That figure is ] 7% of normal, breaking a record that was set back in January/February of 1852.”

The oldest record to be broken. Yet Rippey points out other California cities with long standing records for low precipitation also saw those marks eclipsed during this recent dry spell.

“Like San Jose; .01 of an inch.  Fresno: .04".  Sacramento: .05"," Rippey continued "And even a typical wet spot, like Eureka on the northwestern coast of California.  Just over 2" in January/February; setting an all-time record.”
