Many things are looking up for the University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Dean Michael Parrella said enrolment is up, student retention is up and grants coming into the college are also up. He noted in a typical year, CALS records roughly $18 million in state and federal grants. In the past year, the college netted $36 million.

Parrella said the main reason they were able to double that figure is thanks to the hard work by the Office of Research and Economic Development, which launched an incentive program.

“As faculty, you’re successful at the federal level, and then there’s money coming back in, and in a sense the University is adding to the support, getting another grad student or post doc just to amplify those research projects and again, giving credit to the faculty that are really stepping up and putting these proposals in.”

Parrella noted the college is the middle of the year when it come to grants and awarded funds, but he’s confident CALS will continue it’s growth in the area of grants.
